How does it sound to bike or walk through Napa Valley, taking in this treasure of natural beauty and vineyard views? You can slow time to truly appreciate how precious this protected agricultural land is, cycling or walking at a terroir level while connecting with Napa Valley in a uniquely safe, healthy way.

This is what awaits you on the Vine Trail, which, when completed, will be a 47-mile stretch of Class 1 paved trails through some of California’s most scenic settings, to say nothing of the chance to explore some of the valley’s noted wineries and their wines at a pace which invites sipping, savoring the day, relaxing.

This winery visit itinerary, the second of two, celebrates the opening of an 8.2-mile stretch of the Vine Trail between St. Helena and Calistoga (most of it through the Ag Preserve). The wineries included in these itineraries all donated precious land to make this possible for visitors and locals alike. All are located just off the Vine Trail itself.

These second three wineries are from north to south, starting in St. Helena. You may want to play with having longer stretches between wineries by mixing and matching the two Vine Trail winery visit itineraries.

A few notes:

  • Outside wine and food are not permitted at any of these wineries
  • Most of the wineries require advance reservations, although walk-ins are sometimes accepted. Please check in directly with the wineries as to their policies.

1. Revana Family Vineyard

Vine Trail visitors can embark on a picturesque journey by heading north of the town of St. Helena and walking or riding for 5 to 15 minutes. As they approach the gate to Revana’s beautifully maintained grounds, mature Italian cypress trees will come into view.

Guests can taste a selection of Cabernet Sauvignons under the shade of 165-year-old olive trees or indoors in private spaces. All tastings can add a cheese and charcuterie offering with artisan cheeses and freshly sliced prosciutto and a special al fresco offering for larger groups of cyclists features a family-style pairing with pizzas their woodfire oven and fresh salads.

2. Freemark Abbey

Guests can bike or walk directly onto the Freemark Abbey property, where they’ll find a water station and easy access to restrooms. Light snacks and a wine-by-the-glass menu are offered for enjoyment in the outdoor garden courtyard.

Guests can dig in deeper with Freemark Abbey’s Decades Tasting, exploring wines from different decades or the Cabernet Comparison, enjoying the distinctive tastes of multiple nested appellations across Napa Valley, including their flagship wine from Rutherford.

3. Ehlers Estate

Ehlers Estate is two miles north of St. Helena on the Vine Trail. Guests can turn right on Ehlers Lane to the old stone winery building and enter through the arched doorway.

Ehlers Estate is a historic property in Napa Valley dating back to 1886. Their current tasting room is a restored barn that was originally the winery's barrel room, and the Estate Tasting (a 75-minute experience) guides guests through the philosophy and rich history of Ehlers Estate wine. Guests also get a tour of the property, giving them a glimpse into Ehlers' unique winemaking strategies and their commitment to organic farming practices.
