Open the Cellar: 10-Year Retrospective
Let’s take a look back – 10 years back, to be exact – at the 2014 vintage in Napa Valley. Some may recall the drought or the South Napa earthquake. But if you ask a vintner, they describe the 2014 vintage as an excellent season, noting perfect weather, abundant crop and good fortune, leading to 2014 wines with excellent quality and depth of flavor.
For this #OpenTheCellar, Napa Valley winemakers are offering special library wines from the 2014 vintage. Napa Valley wines are known for their age worthiness, and while now is a great time to enjoy these cellared wines, they can still show well for many years.

2014 Chardonnay by Cakebread Cellars
Vintage Spotlight
One of the richer chardonnay styles made during the mid-2010s, this wine is still fresh with acidity. The primary fruit flavors are evolving into more developed secondary flavors. The wine evokes a nice freshness and good balance with the oak.

Our 2014 vintage is redolent of creamy golden apple, Asian pear and honeydew melon with complementary coconut and sweet oak scents. Fresh and lively on the palate, with rich citrus, apple, melon and tropical fruit flavors, it culminates in a long finish featuring pleasing mineral and spice tones.
100% of the fruit was hand-harvested at night to ensure the grapes retained their purity of flavor and bright natural acidity. The fruit was then whole-cluster-pressed to further preserve freshness and varietal intensity, with the free-run juice transferred to a mix of French oak barrels (96%) and stainless steel tanks (4%) for fermentation. After primary fermentation was completed, 31% of the wine was put through a secondary, malolactic fermentation to enrich its flavors and texture. The barrel-fermented portion of the wine aged sur lie (on the yeast lees) in 28% new French oak barrels for eight months, with bi-weekly stirring of the lees to layer the wine's crisp, vibrant fruit with an appealingly creamy, slightly yeasty tone.

2014 Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon by Spoto Family Wines

2014 was yet another drought year that resulted in lower yields. However with the longer growing season, the fruit we did get was pretty amazing. Currently the wine is absolutely beautiful... dark ripe black cherry and blackberry. Very drinkable now and can go another 20 years.

2014 was yet another amazing vintage from the Napa Valley - intense, rich, dark and delicious! This beautifully balanced Cabernet is a smooth yet expressive blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot and 3% Malbec.
The fruit is from the Oakville Station which is part of the one of the most historic vineyards in Oakville. Wine Spectator recently rated this vineyard number 2 in the world just under Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.
The wine was aged for 36 months in custom French Oak barrels and has aged beautifully for 7 years in the bottle.

2014 Terra9 Cabernet Sauvignon by Taplin Cellars

We chose to highlight our 2014 Terra 9 for two reasons. First, the year 2014 marked the 150th anniversary of our great-grandfather acquiring the land we farm today. In addition, this was the first vintage we began exploring the diversity of microclimates within our Estate, and assembling our favorite lots for Terra 9. This wine celebrates our family’s personal history with this land, and the deep respect for it that we have cultivated since 1864.
The steady summer temperatures and drought conditions of 2014 produced rich, luxurious fruit with exceptional aromatics. At ten years old, aromas of petrichor, dark plum, caramelized raspberry, and anise waft from the glass. A dense core of savory red fruits and brandied amarena cherry unfolds into layers of blueberry compote, sun-dried plum and confit orange zest. The signature minerality of our site thrums in the background, and mature, allspice-scented tannins support the sinuous texture. Mellow notes of clove, nutmeg, milk chocolate and dried cherry emerge on the long finish, concluding in a fresh whisper of mint tea.

Our ancestors settled in the Napa Valley in the mid-1800s. We still farm the same land. This wine comes from a block that back then was said to be nine parts rock and one part soil. Now we know it's this perfect blend of soil that gives depth to this Cabernet we call Terra 9.

2014 Spring Street Merlot by TATE

The 2014 Spring Street Merlot is showing beautifully right now as 10 years of proper cellaring has allowed it to develop a wonderful bottle bouquet. Sourced from a single vineyard in St. Helena in the heart of Napa Valley this wine shows what a 100% Merlot can offer in such a great year.

This is our fourth release of our Merlot, from the Joan-Ellen vineyard. Although 2014 broke records for heat the Joan-Ellen vineyard has fertile rich soil with good water holding capacity. Due to the great conditions of the beginning of the year the vineyard set a huge crop. Great care and sadness was taken during veraison as we dropped half of the crop to the ground, a sacrifice made to allow the remaining fruit to ripen evenly with better complexity. With the heat continuing and the manually reduced crop we picked the Merlot at the earliest point in four years.
The 2014 Merlot was crushed and destemmed and allowed to cold soak for 48 hours. As fermentation kicked off we did pump overs twice a day for ten days. The wine was aged in French oak barrels, 50% new for 22 months in a climate controlled cave.

Whenever we taste through our wines, we always find echoes of the local fruits, plants, rocks, and soil that surround us, the deep and personal expression of our terroir. For the 2014 vintage there are aromas and fruit flavors of the wild fennel, black cherries, and fresh mountain blueberries that grow on the hillsides. The rugged landscape of our vineyards is reflected in the savory flavors of sweet earth, flint, and the native chaparral. The concentration, deep complexity and inherently powerful structure of the PEAK wines reflect our unique growing conditions at high elevation, with longer growing days at slightly cooler temperatures. The extremely long and pure finish shows hints of Tahitian vanilla, black licorice, and rich drinking chocolate, leading to notes of pencil shavings and wet rocks inspiring quiet images of our rocky creek beds. This 2014 bottling boasts deep, dark fruit aromas. A hint of something cool and distant, akin to marine air, opens up to reveal classic black currant and berry syrup aromas. The aromas carry through onto the silky and rich palate, which fills every corner of your mouth. the tannin, acid, and alcohol are in such balance that wine feels sweet, though it is bone dry. The 100% new oak provides structure and subtle vanilla hints on the finish. Decant for at least one hour in advance for maximum enjoyment.

Our grapes are hand-picked at night or in the early morning to give us cold fruit for processing. Individual vineyard blocks are destemmed separately into small stainless steel fermentation tanks and barrels. Grapes are cold soaked before the must is warmed and the fermentation initiated. Small berries coupled with low juice to skin ratios gave us bright ripe flavor and rich tannin concentration in 2014.

For the third year in a row, the superb growing season of 2014 ushered in a vintage that surpassed expectations. Late February rains, on the heels of one of the driest winters on record, gave way to a surprisingly early bud break and an advantageously long period for the grapes to mature and ripen. Spring’s brisk bloom was followed quickly by moderate summer temperatures ranging on average between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit—optimal conditions for producing wines of great depth, concentration and rich, ripe tannins. Conditions remained consistent and favorable throughout the summer and up to veraison, leading to a stunningly bountiful harvest of flawless and fully matured fruit.
The 2014 Toymaker is the culminating taste of this unique and extraordinary vintage. Like the long growing season itself, luscious, ripe, red fruit notes draw a seamless thread of distinguished flavor and texture across the palate, leaving a long, powerfully dense and opulent finish indicative of beautifully matured supple skin tannins.

The Cabernet Sauvignon was picked September 22, 2014, through October 15, 2014, between 27.0 and 28.6 brix.

Starts off light in body with moderate intensity on the nose. Aromas not only of fruit, but of fruit liqueur. Creme de cassis and black cherry liqueur, alcohol-infused maraschino cherries, followed closely by black cherry and ripe black plum pulled straight from the tree. A bouquet of cigar spice, tobacco leaves and leather, all building up to a rich impression of oak on the palate. Flavors of caramel bacon, maple, and brown sugar elegantly take over for a lasting finish. In time, the oak will mellow and the fruit will brighten, and once the tannin—while rough now—begins to soften, this will prove to be a wine of purity and elegance.

Once this wine is opened, it’s a Pandora’s box of complexity and power. Its aromas are clear and to the point, offering dark black fruit, black olives, anise, root beer, graphite and tobacco. These facets on the nose are reminiscent of the great Grand Crus Classes of Bordeaux. On the palate the wine is exquisitely balanced with excellent fruit concentration, giving rich cassis, black cherries, cola and a mineral-driven finish that proves to be balanced and well-structured.

The 2014 vintage at Porter Family Vineyards reflects the unique challenges and rewards of a warm, dry growing season. For the third consecutive year, the weather was hot and dry, but the vineyard’s ability to retain soil moisture, bolstered by well-timed winter rains, ensured a successful harvest. This vintage benefited from the warm and moderate temperatures, which allowed grapes to reach full maturity earlier than usual, leading to an early budding and harvest. The result was an average-sized crop of soft, hedonistic wines that displayed lush fruit characteristics right from the start.
As the wine has aged, it continues to show beautifully, offering familiar and expressive aromas of cassis, bay leaf, and bright cherry fruit upon opening. With time in the glass, deeper notes of blackberry and chocolate emerge, revealing the wine’s layered complexity. A gentle decant enhances the experience, allowing the wine’s underlying depth to shine through. This Cabernet Sauvignon, now ten years old, is elegant yet powerful, showcasing both its refined structure and the richness that promises continued aging potential.

This Petit Verdot comes from our vineyard in Los Carneros AVA of the Napa Valley. The site has been home to our Petit Verdot since 2008. With its cool climate and clay soils, we find this site positioned to exhibit unique qualities and finesse, not unlike those of Bordeaux - our inspiration.
2014 was evenly warm with little to no extreme heat spells, which allowed for maturity to happen at an even rate. Across the board, our 2014 vintage expresses floral qualities on the nose, earthiness and silky tannins on the finish. It is an exceptional vintage for the cellar as it continues to evolve much to the winery lovers delight.

In 2014, Napa Valley's drought cycle provided ideal conditions for even ripening, with heavy spring rains and consistent temperatures. Grapes were harvested early on October 15th, just before the end of the season. Winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown selected top Cabernet Sauvignon barrels, featuring a label design symbolizing the six wings of a Seraphim. The wine has a deep purple hue with aromas of cedar, cassis, violet, and nutmeg, complemented by velvety tannins, bramble, black currant, and a smoky finish.

Alluring aromas of ripe red cherry, fresh raspberries and roasted espresso beans captivate the nose of this reserve wine. It was a stressful year in the vineyard. The temperatures were hot, the fermentation struggled a bit - but we were happy to say that it finished well. Tasted this morning. Still showing its youth - very rich, creamy. Best described as delicious, with notes of milk/dark chocolate, graham cracker.

The wine has a seductive aroma of chocolate-covered cherries on the entry with notes of pomegranate, ginger spice, and fresh flowers. This wine has a great richness from start to finish with a wonderful balance and silky texture. There are flavors of dark chocolate cherries, vanilla, and a long, fresh orange zest finish that reminds me of dark chocolate orange sticks. This is a wine that is hard to put down.

2014 Generations Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Sauvignon by Raymond Vineyards
Vintage Spotlight
Generations is a tribute to the Raymond family’s five generations of
winemaking in the Napa Valley. This limited production wine is 100%
Cabernet. Grapes were fermented on the skins for 26-55 days to lend
complexity and depth to the wine before being racked to new, tight-grained, medium and medium-plus toast French oak barrels for 19
months of aging. Only our best barrels of Taransaud, Demptos, and Baron and Ermitage were selected for this Cabernet Sauvignon. We are especially proud of the 2014 vintage as it marks the 20 year Anniversary of the Generations wine originally created by the Raymond family.

A brilliant wine from Boisset, it exhibits notes of blackberry and cassis, truffle, chocolate and spice bow. Layered and multidimensional with terrific opulence and purity, this is a "wow" wine, and while drinkable now, capable of evolving for 20 or more years.

2014 Cabernet Sauvignon by Accendo Cellars

What strikes me most about this wine is how earth-driven it is - wet clay, loam, scorched earth, enlivened by floral notes and hints of savory spices. The texture is sublime, with super-refined tannins at the entry, following through the mid-palate with a power that builds slowly and evenly to a persistent mineral finish. It is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon.

On the nose, this wine is intense, vibrant and lively, showing
intriguing notes of earth, cedar, tobacco leaf and smoky black
tea. In the mouth, the wine is fresh, poised and precise, with
layers of dark fruits and silky tannins that perfectly support its
sweet core.
Our grapes were hand-picked between September 15th and October 3rd, fermented individually in small tanks, aged in 100% new French oak barrels and bo led after 22 months in barrel on July 29th, 2016.

2014 Cabernet Sauvignon by Portfolio Limited Edition

The 2014 Portfolio Limited Edition Vintage greets the senses with an expressive nose, revealing layers of sweet oak and dark black fruit aromas. It’s a memorable, complex wine with finesse and elegance, featuring plush tannins and a captivating blend of leathery, savory notes, complemented by hints of black pepper and dark plum that linger beautifully. It is all about harmony and balance.
The 2014 started with worrisome drought-like conditions (one of the driest on record in California). But rain came in February and March providing enough water to sustain a healthy canopy during the growing season. Warm spring pushed the bud break on the early side. We had mild and dry conditions throughout the year allowing the maturity of the grapes to evolve in a steady pace. Following a near-perfect summer harvest started early. The grapes reflected an ideal balance between freshness and concentration.

Our reserve Zinfandel comes from the Pocai Ranch located at the southern end of Calistoga’s boundries. This land is where a very old alluvial fan fed out of Dutch Henry Canyon. The soil here is Bale Gravelly Loam, and is a mixture of medium and small rocks in a loose loamy soil. The moisture content is very low, and the drainage excellent. The soil profile is fairly balanced and perfect for viticulture. This vineyard is located in one of the warmest regions in the Napa Valley, and produces rich ripe fruit that tends to be very fruit forward and even jammy in nature.
