Fiona and Hal Barnett fell in love with Napa Valley in the early 1980s, leading them to purchase a rugged, 40-acre property atop Spring Mountain in 1983. What was once dense forest and rocky terrain—inhabited by dozens of rattlesnakes—was soon transformed into a thriving vineyard. With a vision of crafting small-production, high-elevation wines that reflect the land’s unique character, they planted their first Cabernet Sauvignon vines in 1984. For years, they commuted from San Francisco as the vineyard took root, culminating in their first harvest in 1989, which produced just 232 cases of "Spring Mountain Cabernet."

In 1991, Fiona and Hal made the estate their full-time home, raising their three daughters while gradually expanding the winery. Today, Barnett Vineyards produces approximately 8,000 cases annually, with 5,000 to 6,000 cases coming from their esteemed estate vineyards. Their focus remains on handcrafted, limited-production wines from the Rattlesnake and Spring Mountain Districts, particularly Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
