Makers' Stories
Shaina Harding
— The Napa Valley is the heart and soul of California wines. I am forever grateful to be a part of crafting transformative wines here and sharing in her beauty.
Name a Napa Valley vintner who has influenced you and briefly explain why.
Aaron Pott's love of the land and winemaking bravado has been very influential to me. He showed me not to be afraid to experiment and try something new, or to dig into lessons of the past in the pursuit of making the best wine possible.
Tell us about your first Napa Valley harvest…
My first harvest was 2008 at Domaine Chandon. When they allowed me inside the press to dismantle it at midnight, I was immediately hooked. Must in my hair, and an O2 meter on my collar - I knew this was the life for me.
What's your all-time favorite food and wine pairing?
Chenin Blanc with heirloom potato tacos.
If you weren't a Napa Valley vintner, what would you be doing?
I'd be a show runner.
How did you get started in the wine business?
I started selling and drinking wine at a steakhouse from a land down under when I was 18. I eventually attended the UC Davis Enology and Viticulture program and have spent my career loving on my clients' wines in the Napa Valley.
What is your winemaking philosophy?
I'm a wine nurturer. I believe in letting each barrel become the best version of itself, but being ever present to make sure it happens. I believe if I give patience and love to my wines, it will show in the glass.
What does "cultivating excellence" as a Napa Valley vintner mean to you?
The Napa Valley is such a special and unique place. Being able to highlight that in our wines, and share that with wine lovers throughout the world, is very important to me.
