Makers' Stories
Irene and Ed Ojdana
— The fruit takes what it needs from the soil, and the soil asks what it needs from us.
What is your winemaking philosophy?
The fruit takes what it needs from the soil, and the soil asks what it needs from us. We and our very talented winemaker, Rob Lloyd, are passionate about maximizing the potential of our vineyard and translating this into outstanding and unique wines.
How did you get started in the wine business?
Many of our friends and colleagues were really into wine, so you could say we fell in with the wrong crowd! A bigger influence was Ed's 2004 appointment to the UC Davis executive leadership board for the Department of Viticulture and Enology, a position he continues to hold and one that has helped to foster his wine business acumen.
What's your all-time favorite food and wine pairing?
2016 Vineyard {511} Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon and flourless chocolate cake.
Name a Napa Valley vintner who has influenced you and briefly explain why.
It was Robert Mondavi who said, “A rising tide floats all boats.” One of the things we value most in Napa Valley is its ongoing spirit of cooperation and collegiality. One of our greatest joys in entering this business is all the friends we’ve made.
What’s the strangest word you’ve used to describe the smell or taste of wine?
Pencil shavings, scorched earth and graphite.
What's one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
Ed was a pole vaulter in high school.
Irene once taught Freshman English in a fire station to firefighters who, at the sound of the alarm, leapt out of their chairs onto firetrucks, leaving her all alone in the classroom.
Tell us about your first Napa Valley harvest…
It was 2008, and we had no hands-on experience with a harvest. We were awakened by noises in our vineyard at 5 a.m. and, when we went outside, discovered shadowy figures scooting around with lights on their forehead. We thought we were being invaded by aliens. But it was our vineyard management team crew harvesting our grapes!
